Fastest dog in the world... what is it?

Postby whippetgood » Wed May 29, 2013 2:48 pm

As more and more members upload their dogs speeds we'll get a good idea as to which breeds really are the fastest. What do you reckon those breeds will be and what order would you put them in?

Re: What breed is fastest?

1 - Greyhound
2 - Lurcher
3 - Saluki
4 - Whippet

...... and then it gets a bit hard to seperate the breeds but Borzoi, Sloughi, Wolfhound, Pharaoh hound and Azawakhs are in there.

I would imagine that deerhound would be in the top few fastest dogs too, anything that can outrun a deer would have to be pretty quick!!!!

So far, the order is:

Greyhound
Whippet
Saluki
Portuguese Podengo
Borzoi
Australian Kelpie
Great Dane
Rat Terrier

The Greyhounds and Whippets are totally dominating at the moment so if you have a different breed of dog and reckon they have what it takes, put a GPS data logger on them and upload their speed to the results table ;)

Wow Beldanan, that's a pretty comprehensive list! Nice work.

You may have to move German Shepherd up a bit as we just had someone register one on the results table at 61kph (31.9mph).

Your list is more realistic than many floating around on the web..... like this one........ http://iheartdogs.com/the-5-fastest-dog-breeds/

Yeah Im sure your right. No doubt Ive played favourites a bit though I attempted not too. Will be interesting to see in the long run. May have over estimated a few like Irish Wolfhounds as they are my favourite but it will be interesting to see. When my baby Beezer is more mature I'll test her and see how she goes though I reckon the boys may be a bit faster in a straight line!

It's pretty hard to know for sure how it will ultimately pan out. There are about half a dozen breeds that are dead certs for the top ten but my experience so far is that it's remarkable just how fast some breeds are compared to how fast they are supposed to be. Plus there are always exceptions to the rule as some dogs are just freaks. In general, the speeds we are getting exceed the accepted standard for a given breed. We are using a more reliable and far more accurate method of measuring speed than has been used in the past. Also, most of the speeds indicated on the web tend to be "average" speeds. This is certainly the case with Greyhounds.

Love to see what your Ibizan can do when she's old enough! Post up some pics.

The last 4 times I ran my K9, Bella, she's clocking in at a max of 39.4 mph. I had a GPS with faster updates but it's not accurate so I went back to the one that is updating every 2.5 seconds. I need something better and one that is as accurate is my Garmin Alpha. Either way, I think we will break 40-41mph by the fall.

It's good point you raise Jack regarding GPS accuracy. I'm currently testing three different brands of GPS data loggers for accuracy and suitability for our use; that is, measuring the instantaneous speed of our dogs. So far, they appear to be living up to their manufacturers claims but I'll do a full write up on the outcome when I've finished.
